Perama Cave

You will meet the picturesque village Perama only ten kilometres from Ligiades on the road that goes from Metsovo to Trikala. The Cave of Perama was created 1.500.000 years ago in the interior of Goritsa hill, exactly above the village. It was discovered by residents of Perama in 1940 and speleologists Anna and Ioannis Petrohilos started exploring it in 1956. The cave is known for the variety of stalactites and stalagmites and is said to be one of the best caves in the world. Mitsikeli is the mountain that looms over the northern Greek city of Ioannina. Its southern face rises from the shores of Lake Pamvotis at an elevation of 450 meters all the way to the summit. The summit of Mitsikeli offers wonderful views in every direction. Due to its pointed summit, a climber gets awarded with a 360 degree view. To the north and northwest one can see the Timfi and Smolikas mountains. To the east are the Pindus mountais of Lakmos and Tzoumerka. To the south at the foot of the mountain is the city of Ioannina and Lake Pamvotis with Tomaros dominating the background. This mountain can be climbed during all months of the year, but it may be neccesary to have crampons as this mountain recives a good amount of snow every year.

Getting there

If you drive on the main road through the town of Ligiades, it will take you nearly to the summit of the 5800 foot mountain peak. There is a radio tower near the summit of the mountain where you can park your car. From there the summit is only 15 minutes with an elevation roughly 360 feet.
